Re-review of Deceptively Delicious...

A few weeks ago, I reviewed Jessica Seinfeld's cookbook Deceptively Delicious. (No, I was not paid for the post, would love to be...but no) I have read much about this book on the blogosphere, and I have seen much about it on the news. Let me reiterate...I love this book. The recipes are not only easy to follow, but quite yummy. I'd say I use something from her book 3-4 times a week. Now, here is where I want to clarify...I don't not serve fresh veggies with the dishes. This book is not a way to replace veggies in yours or your child's diet. I don't know if I made that point clear in my first review. The deal here is that if I am going to serve mac-n-cheese, I'll choose the healthier one from this book over Kraft. I still serve broccoli on the side, when Miss Peach picks at the broc. and won't eat it, at least I know she got some cauliflower in the mac., or carrots in the pasta sauce, or spinach in the brownies (yes spinach...it's very good, I promise). All of these recipes are a healthier version of things that I would serve anyway. I am so happy to have this option. For the record...I highly recommend her version of rice crispy squares. I brought them to a playgroup and they were a huge hit with both kiddos and adults! They have no high fructose corn syrup (the devil) in them, they do have flax seed meal (so good for you, omega 3). Long story short, it's not replacing fresh veggies, it's just a healthier way to serve old favs. That definitely works for me!

Changing My Life!

OMG!!! This book has changed my life! I liked the idea of this book, so I picked it up. I am not a chef, I am just stumbling through trying to feed my little family. Maybe you are lucky, maybe your kiddos eat veggies, maybe you eat enough veggies. I know I don't eat enough good stuff. Whenever I try to feed veggies to Miss Peach, she hands them to Daddy to eat...She's not havin' it. Which brings me to the concept of this book...sneaking fruit and veggie purees into foods that you and your kiddos already love. It really works! Yesterday I made the macaroni and cheese with cauliflower puree...insanely good, low fat, (I made it with wheat pasta) Miss Peach ate it all, and then some! I can not stress how yummy the dishes are! For dinner last night I made the tuna salad and cauliflower puree...again, huge hit! Preparing the puree is quick and easy (you need a Cuisinart) and the recipes are easy to follow. I just can't say enough about this...Check it out in the bookstore, if you like what you see, buy it! No, I am not being paid for this post...Although, Jessica Seinfeld (yes the author is married to Jerry Seinfeld) if you would like to pay me, I will gladly accept a check;)

Ideas Wanted

It is backwards day over at Works for Wed. I have a question to put to the blogosphere. How does one get a toddler to start brushing their teeth? We bought the Elmo toothbrush, and the princess toothpaste...she ended up sleeping with it. Kind of missed the whole brushing thing. I can't get her to put the brush into her mouth. She will brush my mouth, Daddy's mouth, she even tried to brush kitty's mouth...What should I try???

A Question of Time Out

Being that it is Works for Me Wed., I thought I would pose this to the group. Miss Peach is two years and one month. She is a wonderful child, but is definitely in the "terrible twos". There are times when she needs a parent imposed break. I had tried just picking her up and plunking her in her crib when the tantrum became out of control. She usually screamed for about 5-10 min. and then fell asleep, or calmed down and played in her crib. She obviously needed a break. A friend (with a child the same age) mentioned to me that while this was a good "idea", putting her in the crib might mess up her sleeping habits because Miss Peach would eventually equate sleep/crib, with punishment. I see her point. She said she puts her little one in the bathroom and shuts the door for about 5 min. That seems like a whole nother can of worms (with messing up the potty training routine) as well as being potentially dangerous. On the Today Show, there was a woman talking time out, using a "time out mat" with a timer on it, along with other products from a group moms on the edge. I think Miss Peach is just a bit to young to stay in a time out zone, but soon. So I ask, what is working for you? While time outs work for me, is there a better way? What will work for a young two year old? I need some advice.......Thanks!
