"How do I get a library card?" Miss Peach asked the lady behind the counter.
"Well young lady, you have to be able to write your name. Can you do that?" replied the woman.
"S's are hard...I can't make them yet:(" My little girl was just a bit crushed that she would be coming home that day without that plastic card that read Chicago Public Library...
That was about a month ago.
Cut to last night...I had just gotten home at 9pm after having spent an amazing four days in Ojai at a little gathering called Creative Alliance (more on that later this week). I was in the kitchen, and Miss Peach was bursting with excitement. I thought it was because she had missed Mommy so much...but that was not all.
"Mommy, I have something to tell you." she said as tears began to well up in her eyes and a smiled beamed from ear to ear.
I sat down on the little stepping stool next to the stove, held both her tiny hands in mine, and said "Tell me what you have to say my little pixie."
"Mommy...I wrote my whole name and got my library card!" exclaimed my sweet little Peach as tears streamed down her face, she threw her arms around me and hugged me so tightly that I could barely breathe. I was so excited for my budding reader! There was only the tiniest twinge of "I had missed this little milestone..." a milestone I didn't even know existed...but a milestone none the less.
Later that night, I read a story to The Little Man, kissed him goodnight, and stepped out of the room. He stood up in bed and called out "Mommy..." I looked back, and is hands were on the side of his car-car bed and he looked down with a sad little face:(
"What's the matter Little Man?"
"Mommy...I didn't get a library card today:(" My heart broke for my sad little fellow...
"Oh my little man...we will practice writing your name, and very soon you will get your very own library card. Does that sound good to you?"
He smirked up his chubby little lips and smiled..."Yes Mommy...I will practice:)" Then he reached his hands up to my cheeks, smushed them together, and giggled.
He is such a silly little fellow...
Oh, and you can bet I am darn well gonna be there when he writes his name for the librarian;p

ReplyDeleteOur girls showed everyone their library card for months. Even now they carry it in their little purses like it's a driver's license. It's a big deal when you're little. Congrats to Miss Peach!
