Extra Ribs

I'll tell you right here and now...I LOVED my wedding dress. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it! That said, let me back up for a moment...

I saw the dumbest movie in the world over the weekend. Bride Wars...stoopid:P It did however, make me think about my wedding dress. Whenever I see brides going nuts, and paying a fortune over Vera Wang...I'm like...whatever:P My dress rocked it!

I went to a local Chicago dress designer...who btw beat Vera for the cover of Bride magazine the year I was married. She made my dress to measure for me...it. was. STUNNING.

After I watched this painfully horrible movie (Kate Hudson...Anne Hathaway, what were you thinking?) I started wondering if my wedding dress still fit? What do you do with a wedding dress? I mean this is the most expensive piece of clothing I will probably ever buy...and I'll never wear it again:P

I kid you not, the year I got married...I wanted to be a bride for Halloween, just so I could wear it again! No, I didn't...but I wanted to;)

You guessed it...I went upstairs today...dug my dress out of the closet...and tried that bad boy on.

As I stepped into it...I thought..."I think it will fit, I don't feel any bigger than when I got married." (which was six years ago and two babies ago)

I zipped it up over my hips...over my waist...then I thought "I made it past the waist, score...it fits!"

Not. So. Fast.

Is it possible for my rib cage to get bigger? Under the bust, over the waist...the zipper just stopped. I was about an inch bigger in the rib cage. How weird! There is no meat there...just rib cage...

Ah well...I suppose I won't be a bride for Halloween this year:PCan I blame the kiddos for my expanded rib cage???

  1. Yes. Definitely. One of the things they don't tell you in What To Expect When You're Expecting (and there are many...).

  2. Yes - your ribs had to expand to make room for babies. The kids are to blame!!

  4. Wow, that you can even get the dress on at all :). I'm sure the ribs shifted... the whole body shifts.

I'd LOVE to see a pic of you on your wedding day. What I can see of the dress, it looks absolutely gorgeous.

  7. I think that's pretty damn impressive. No way in hell I'm trying mine on!!! And that movie was DREADFUL. What on earth were they thinking??

  8. oh the dress looks so beautiful, post more pictures of it! I don't even want to think about trying on my wedding dress... I KNOW it will not fit me. But it was the most expensive dress I've ever owned. I also loved my wedding dress, and I am totally serious when I say I also told my husband and friends that I was going to wear it again for Halloween. I totally wanted to, and now I don't know why I did. It could have been totally fun. So anyway, you dress, even if it doesn't zip all the way up, still looks great on you!
I didn't love Bride Wars... but I did not totally hate it, either. I got to eat popcorn in a theatre - I don't get to do that too often anymore!

  9. So that's why my old standby formal gown wouldn't fit when I needed it a couple months ago! My ribcage expanded from pregnancies. Yes, that's the ticket!!!

My wedding dress is preserved in a box, looking eerily like a decapitate bride in coffin. Freaky!

  10. It's gorgeous!

And yes, I think your ribcage and certainly expand from pregnancy. I'm fairly certain my did...along with my hips :(

  11. Remember, Scarlett O'Hara couldn't get her corset back down to 16 inches around after she had a kid. No matter how hard Mammy pulled, it wouldn't go below 20. (Which is still freakishly small. How on earth did those women internal organs continue to function when sucked in so tight??)

  12. I swear that happened to me too with a brides maid dress from a friend's wedding. I don't have anything but ribs in that area either. I was also dumb founded.

    Lovely dress too.

  13. I'm impressed that it fit...until the rib cage. I think my waist was a whole lot smaller 10 years ago. I think it's awesome that you loved your dress!!

  14. OK, now I need to go try mine on. Except, a cat peed on mine when it fell off the hanger while we were on our honeymoon. That might be unpleasant.

And, yeah, the kids are to blame. Maybe also because you're in such great shape. Seriously.

  15. You had kids, and your heart got bigger. So of COURSE your rib cage expanded! ;)

  17. Of course you can blame the babies. It looks like a beautiful dress.

  18. Maybe your ribs expanded because of all the yelling, I mean lung expansion we Moms have to do everyday!

  19. Yep, the little effers expand your ribcage. Some women have bigger feet - permanently! - after having kids!

  20. Whatever, you still look pretty darn good!

    Also I love Mary's answer. :)

  21. I think the dress must have shrunk.

  22. Of COURSE you can blame the kids. And I'm gonna jump on the "we need to see a wedding picture or two" bandwagon!

  23. I am impressed that you can still fit in the dress. I don't think I could fasten one button on mine.

  24. Im running upstairs and seeing if my dress still fits.

  25. I LOVE that you tried your dress on!!!! Mine will be too big - I weighed more before I got married b/c I drank then

  26. Yes you can! The last two ribs on each side aren't connected with the sternum, which is lucky because during pregnancy they might move a little. And possibly not go back. So yes, you can blame the kiddos.

But I would count my blessings, because I'm pretty sure that of those reading this only precious few can still fit into their wedding dress!!

  27. Duh!

I blame the ribs, the hips, the belly, the thighs all on the kids...

The good news? My wedding dress totally still fits me! The bad news? It was a maternity dress. :(

  28. That dress is gorgeous!

Of course it's because of the pregnancies that you can't fit into it. I can't fit into most of my old clothes and it's because of my expanded hips. And okay, maybe my stomach pooch because I can't lay off the chocolate. But it's mostly because of my hips.

  29. GORGEOUS!!!

Yeppers, the rib cage and the hips expand for the kiddos. Bad news, neither one ever really returns to size.

My dress is hermetically sealed otherwise, I'd wear it every dang day ;-)

  30. Hearing the word ribs, I can only think of the kind to eat, you know, from pigs.

Unless you're a cannibal, and then I suppose the two go together even more.

Which makes me think of McRib.

Which I've never actually eaten, and am now somewhat frightened I've invented in my head.

    McRib, were you ever real?

    The world may never know.

'Cause I'm just far too lazy to Google it.
