What it Gets You...

After yesterday's post about multi million dollar home snooping, it occurred to me that some of you might not totally understand city living. Why would you if you don't live there? Here's the thing, in The Big City, you can have a 3 million dollar home, sitting next door to a rental building. What I'm saying it, there are many price points in my neighborhood, in all TBC neighborhoods. The more bucks you have, the more space you get...that's basically the deal. So yeah, we are somewhere in between the million dollar homes and the rentals...the town home.

When I saw the open houses on the big houses, snoop I did...First up, the 3 million dollar home...OMG...I 'bout died when I walked in the door! Look at the light, and the space! I just LOVED it. Did you notice the curving stairway? I'm telling you, this house was breathetaking.
All of the bedrooms on the second floor had so much light and space. Wow! Oh, in case you were wondering. When you buy a 3 million dollar house in the city, it also comes with a $25,000 a year tax bill. Can you believe it?!? Paying over 2,000 bucks a month in taxes! I can't even think about it...let alone afford it:P
Oh, if any of you thought about "how big of a yard 3 million bucks gets you"...here it is. I thought some of you might get a kick out of it;)

Next up...the 2 million dollar house. This one needed rehab work on the upper floors, I think that's why 6,000 sq feet was only 2 million bucks. That said, the kitchen had totally been worked over, and I LOVED it...
Serioulsy, if I ever feel like I ever have money burning a hole in my pocket, the first thing I want to do is bust open our kitchen...
How fabulous is this? I love (again) the open-ness of it all. Our kitchen is small and enclosed. I love the idea of breaking down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. First chance I get...that's what I'm doing;)

Now then. I've given you a little taste of some pricey houses...but I feel like I haven't given you a true perception of what is going on. See, these houses are actually not the big kahunas. I live in an area that is protected by all sorts of zoning. That just means you can't buy stuff and knock it down.

If you go about four blocks away, the zoning changes. The result is that the uber rich folks swept in and bought up 2-4 places, demolished them, and put up what we call "garagemahols" or "mcmansions". They are huge and take up lot line to lot line. Most of them are majorly lacking in style. I need to go down the road and take a picture of one of them (price tag of 14 million bucks!) and another one (which I think went over 14 mill.) You just gotta see them to believe them...more tom:)

  11. Yes, but wouldn't it be terrible to have to live like that? You know, having to leave a breadcrumb trail every time you went to the toilet so that you could find your way back? ;-)

I'll take that kitchen, thank you.

  15. I always watch that show on HGTV "What You Get For The Money". It takes you around the country and shows you what you can buy for $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000. Very interesting. Six thousand sq feet for $2 mil is actually quite a steal. I was surprised. Now if only I could come up with $2 mil. ;)

  17. And that is why I'm a suburbs kind of gal. I totally get why you love the city because it's the same kind of love I have for GRASS. Lots and lots of grass. And trees. And flowers. And SPACE.

  18. Ooooooooh the bedroom & the curvy staircase are fab...the yard sucks! I'm in Suburbia so we have back yards large enough for pools, swing sets, dogs, children, grills & patios. I cannot imagine living with a strip of grass & referring to it as my yard.
Guess I'll never be 'Big City'. ;)
Cannot WAIT to see pics (if you get them) of the $14 Mil homes. It is difficult to imagine spending that much on a house.

  19. Okay, I'm convinced. Suburbia in Houston is nothing like The Big City. Wow...that's insane pricing you've got there!
