Ahhh the Holidays

Typically, we go somewhere else for Thanksgiving (usually Husband's side of the family). That however does not stop Husband from buying and cooking a big turkey at our house. We then eat turkey sandwiches for a week (I am not complaining).
We moved into our townhome almost a year ago. The folks who owned this townhome before us did a little pimping in the kitchen arena (that is about 10 years old, most warranties have expired on major appliances). Apparently a Dacor stove is the goods. What do I know? This thing has a digital typepad for temp. control. Stupid thing about this pad? It is heat sensitive! Don't even get me started on why a stove has a temp. gauge that will "eventually short out from heat". That's brilliant! Long story short...$100 later, stove guy tells me it's going to cost $1200 to fix this stove! (replace the heat sensative pad with another heat sensitive pad) Ummmm...no thank you! I need to buy a new stove, but the burners work so, I've been getting by. Cue the biggest cooking holiday of the year...

Me: "Husband, I know you like to buy a turkey for us, but...let's skip it this year since we don't have a working stove."
Husband: "Too late."

Great, now I have a huge bird coming (he orders them from the butcher, it's coming today) and no stove to cook it in:P I suppose I need to go to Home Depot and buy a stove...right? I am so clueless on appliances. Seriously, I think I'd opt for torture over appliance shopping. Someone shoot me now...Anyone need an uncooked bird???

  1. Yikes. I don't envy you on the bird-cooking. I am hoping to live my entire life never having prepared or cooked a turkey with my own hands...

The appliance shopping, however, sounds divine! What I wouldn't give to have a new stove. Or oven. Or fridge!

Ever have a deep-fried turkey? I never have, but I hear they're tasty. And you could let your husband cook it outside!

  2. I LOVE fried turkey! To me, there's just no other way to cook it.

Husband is going to smoke one this year though. In the smoker - I always feel the need to clarify when I tell people that my husband is smoking a Turkey.

LOL - Usually he gets a bunch of cheese, salmon, Turkey, and anything else he thinks he can smoke (see, there it is again) and I end up telling people "Budman is smoking stuff this year. I mean, food, he's smoking food - In the smoker, I mean he's smoking it in the smoker"

    It just never sounds right.

  4. no no no - just get a Nesco Roaster. Nesco is a brand name ... just get a roaster. I think they're about $30 this time of year. Put it on the counter, plug it in, drop the turkey in, done.

I'm gonna drop an Amazon link, but you can go to Target, WalMart, Sears - anywhere.

  5. If it is small enough you can make it in the crock pot. The roaster is a good call & heck yeah, if you have the stuff to fry...I'd totally pick that option. The hubs & I have been thinking about doing that for the past few years but keep wimping out. ;)
    Good luck!

  8. I am with the others on the roaster.

I have crock potted chickens before. The skin was really gross to me. It was not my preferred method.

Did I miss something? Are you not eating Thanksgiving elsewhere this year? You could freeze it until you have a new oven if you won't be needing on T.D.

  9. Yes, we will be eating elsewhere tom...I just need to cook this thing. I have no room to put it anywhere!

  10. Think of it as an early Christmas present ... and don't get one with a heat sensitive control panel! LOL

  11. You could bring it down here and wait for me to cook it. The kids can play with the horses while they wait, and you can skip hubbies' family.

  12. I have an excellent grill, with a rotisserie that will cook that bird right up! and even have some Doritos to go with it!

  13. Can you just go to Home Depot and cook the turkey there?

  14. Yikes. I have heard deep fried turkey is really good. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving!

  15. We bought the really big rotisserie from that annoying "Set it and Forget it!" commercials. It fits a 21lb Turkey with no problem! And the turkey tastes great.
To get more time on buying an oven, you could go buy a toaster oven, it works for small things. And it is cheap, compared to a stove.
Or, your husband could get the fun of a lifetime and buy a turkey fryer. But, between the fryer and all the stupid, expensive peanut oil to cook it in, you could just eat at the Olive Gardens twice. OK, maybe not that bad, but it could be anywhere from $80 to $120 to go that route. But then he has the fryer.
I am thankful that this year, my husband is NOT using the fryer. We are going back to the rotisserie!

  20. Warden,

You can do it...yes, you can. Any one who can train for a marathon and handle all the things you do can handle the bird cooking.

If not you start a new family tradition.....ham sandwiches...Smile. best of luck. Have a great holiday.

  21. Yikes! Hope it was a good one!

P.S. Okay, everyone's Xmas's blog banners are making me want one. How busy are you these days? Think u might be able to rustle me one up?

  22. I woulda fried that baby! A turkey fryer is WAY less than a stove by far and I Hubs does that, so it keeps me from having to cook a turkey, which by the way I've NEVER done.

  23. We have a Gemini 2 (I think it's Maytag) and I love it! We have flat top cook top and two ovens. :) One oven is average and the second oven is not as tall, like a pizza oven kinda. I love the smaller oven cuz it cooks most everything we cook. It heats up quick and helps save energy costs that way - oh yeah, it is energy star. :) So that's one suggestion to save you looking round. :)
