The mean reds

I am in a funk:/ You can totally tell...right? I've been there for a couple weeks now. Thing is...I have diagnosed the problem, but even when you know...it doesn't mean you're out of the funk...ya know?

I believe Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's (best movie ever) called it "the mean reds"..."Suddenly you're afraid and you don't know what you're afraid of." I'd say my funk is close to that...only replace "afraid" with "anxious" and you got where I am.
For me the best way to deal with "the funk" is to soldier through, business as usual. Soldier through I do...today I found myself and the kiddos at the zoo. The little water spouts is one of those uptight parent's nightmare.
In this situation...I have gotten really good at exhaling, and letting my kiddos get wet. I mean...they're kiddos...they're supposed to get wet...right? The folks we were with made a beeline out of there (no way they were getting wet) I just let my kids go be kids...
...and before I knew it...I was smiling:)

I'm still wrestling with my case of the mean reds...it doesn't mean I can't have a little fun while I'm riding through it;)

  1. Awww, methinkgs you need some good summer tv to take your mind off stuff! Try Ashes to Ashes on BBC america -- like Lost but not!!

    Great photos!

  2. I had those a few summers ago.
I took the poor dog out and walked us both into the ground.. because someone told me that walking/exercise produces some little hormone or whatever that will chase away the anxiety etc.
It just made me hot and sweaty ..
I like the babies idea ... go sit under a fountain with the kids :)

  3. OOOOH thanks for reminding me of those water things. We have a spray-park near here that sounds perfect for tomorrow's 90 degree weather!

Hope the funk passes soon hun. Big hugs come August!

  4. I get like that sometimes. Except I get blah... I dont want to do ANYTHING. Not for me, not for the kids (although, I do lots of things for them. I certainly dont ignore them) but I feel like... icky. Nothing is fun, nothing is exciting enough to get dressed for. Then just when I start thinking "maybe Im one of those people hwo needs medicinal help" it gets better. and im back to normal.

hang in there! being aware of the feeling is the hardest part- I think. Fight for it. Play in the water more with the kids! Feel FREE and have FUN and soon all that fun will chase the mean reds away!

  5. I read your blog and all the other young mommy blogs and so many of them remind me of me back then when my kids were little. I was anxious and uptight and lots of other things that I probably should have been medicated for lol. Lighten up, relax, whatever it is is not worth the stress. I don't want to get all holy roller on you, because it really isn't me, but seriously, let go and let God. He led you to it, he will get you through it. And 20 years from now you'll wish you'd done things a little differently. OK off my soap box now because I made myself cry LOL.

  6. You know how that old song goes. "Smile although your heart is breaking... even when there are clouds in the sky...You'll find that life is still worthwhile if you just smile"

Here's a smile for you :-D Hope it scares the funk away!

  8. I hope your funk isn't exacerbated by e-mails from a sad, pathetic loser who reminds you of a really dark time in your life.

Getting all wet in those fountains looks pretty awesome.

  9. You'll figure it all out. You're good like that!

And, dude, spontaneous water play is one of the few really great privileges of being a kid. Sucks that not all parents get that.

  10. I used to be one of those uptight moms and found out that once I let my son just be a kid I was a much happier mom.

  11. I think you need to find a few grown up water spouts. Something to make you let go and just BE, you know?

Love the pics. We want to visit Lincoln Park soon and I think that those spouts will be calling our names...

  12. I'm thinking your friend that "high tailed" out of there has a worse case of the funk than you do... looks fun.

  13. Learning to exhale and just let my kids splash, get muddy, etc is one of the best things I can do.

Hope your funk is GONE now mama! We all get that way!

  15. Hope your funk has passed (yeah, I'm a little behind in my reader...) I totally know how you feel. My children may or may not have watched more TV in the last 24 hours than I normally let them watch in a week - but hey - at least they are getting a break from their grumpy old mom.
