If at first you don't succeed...

Long story short...I went out drinking for Husbands work thing, came home, and had a lovely rejection email from Istockphoto:( A rejection email!!! I almost wasn't going to share my disappointing news, and then I thought "I am taking you on this journey with me...so I gotta share the bad along with the good news."
I am going to dive in...For running mom and juggling mom, I received this explanation...

We\'re sorry but this artwork is not what we are currently looking for in terms of composition, color usage, use of line and shape, detail and/or file complexity.\n\nFor more information please refer to: http://www.istockphoto.com/article_view.php?ID=367\n\nFor more information on the files iStockphoto does and doesn\'t need, please refer to our Illustration Training Manual: http://www.istockphoto.com/illustrator_7.0_neededfiles.php

For cooking mom...I got this... We\'re sorry but we feel that the details in your outlines could be sharper/cleaner. Please ensure you are checking your files very closely and tidying up any rough or uneven areas, and that the details are crisp and clear.\n\nFor more information please refer to: http://www.istockphoto.com/article_view.php?ID=367

Well, isn't that just a kick in the teeth?!?

I think on the first two...my problem is file complexity. They throw everything and a bag of chips at you in the canned admin. I poured over other juggling and running pics, and my submissions were better than most. The thing about Illustrator is you draw by creating shapes. Combining those shapes makes complex shapes. Remember, I am self taught (this year). I guess I gotta bone up on complex shapes:PThis is the Illustrator dashboard. When you are drawing, you are in outline mode. I think on the cooking mom pic, I just need to really tighten up all points where lines meet. It's a pain in the butt, but I thought I had cleaned it up enough...apparently, I was wrong:PHere is one of the other drawings I was planning on submitting. I guess I need to really dig in and clean the outline image. Maybe I can turn each character into it's own complex shape? I still have four other drawings I was going to submit, so maybe I can work them over as well. You know the lovely folks (insert sarcasm here) at Istockphoto left me with these parting words...

You're welcome to return in 3 days, upload some new samples and we'll re-process your application.

Well thanks:P You know I am just a stubborn old dawg, and that's exactly what I'm going to do! Now you know...and Istockphoto...just so you know, "it is on!"

  4. And in my never-ending quest to find the positive, at least they actually gave you explanations. I would always much rather be given a reason to work harder than just be flat-out rejected. Kind of like how I would rather run a marathon where I don't do my best because of freezing rain than have perfect conditions but still not end up with a good enough time. It's always good to have a REASON, and it's even better that it's one you can do something about!

    Don't give up!

  5. Ouch! I'm sorry about this. I would strongly encourage you to keep trying. I've found that the most minute output details make the difference in the final product. Esh.

  6. Huh?? I thought the pictures were awesome, I guess that IBlahBlahBlah is more picky than I am.

Well, to use a phrase that drives me batty: If at first, you don't suceed... (it's still a good one, though)

    Hang in there.

  9. They were definitely less than complimentary. You could write back to them letting them know that if they wish to be insulting they could at least be a little more creative with the imagery.

  11. I'm calling bullsh*t on this one. To my admittedly untrained eye, your stuff looks as good as or better than the stuff they stock. Seriously. I don't know crap about the specs and complex shapes, but as a consumer who would be looking for this kind of stuff... your stuff kicks their stuff's a$$.

  29. Don't give up! I think they are awesome and I am so fascinated by the whole process of computer illustration. I have an art degree but haven't made a career of it (of course not), it's become more of a hobby. I really appreciate the work that goes into a piece and love to look at what you have done. I think I left you a message somewhere the other day but it was very late and I was very tired so I hope I sent it! I wanted to share the Kreativ Blogger Award with you. It was given to me and I'm passing it on to you for your fun and creativity. You can pick it up here:
