The Bunker House

It's kinda weird. We live in a townhouse in The Big City. I suppose square footage is relative depending on where you are. Our townhome...maybe 2200 sq. feet. Quite frankly, four bedrooms, three bathrooms with three levels is about all I think I can handle.
That being said...there is this one house. The Bunker House. Do you have one of these? Husband, Miss Peach and The Little Man all know that Mommy wants to live in The Bunker House. This house is literally right around the corner from our townhome. Whenever we are out and about, I always swing by just to sneak a peak at my house.
You are probably thinking "The Bunker House" is the name of whoever lives in the house. Not so. I don't know the folks living in my house. I do know it's an elderly couple.
I love houses that have a "bunker" feel. Do you know what I mean by this? I mean...a place that feels like a fortress from the outside. The Bunker House, from the outside is giant blocks of concrete. No windows, you can't see in at all. There is just one locked iron gate, and solid walls of concrete...bunker.
Here's the deal...once you get inside the concrete, the place is a city oasis. Inside the concrete is a yard/garden with floor to ceiling windows overlooking plush green. I love that! I love the privacy, the safety, and the freedom of space that only I get to enjoy.
Right now, if The Bunker House were to go on the market, there is no doubt in my mind that we would not be able to afford it. I know this...yet, I walk by this house many times a week and look at it. I think to myself..."Someday this house will go on the market, and I will buy it."
How in the world do I think this is going to happen? I am happy in my townhome. We are very comfortable here. It is the place I consider home. Truly, I feel grateful for this wonderful mini-bunker. That being said...tomorrow the kiddos and I will saddle up the stroller and go to the healthclub. On the way home, we will go a block out of our way to walk past The Bunker House. I will think to myself "Someday this house will go on the market, and I will buy it."
Do you have one of these???

  1. Oh my gosh. I totally have one of these. I call it the "farm house." It's a bit older than our home and looks like it once was a farm house. Lots of windows, a wrap around front porch, a walk out back porch from the kitchen, a nice sized yard, with a fence. They used to have a playset in the back, but it's been replaced by a little garden. I love it! I swear, if it ever goes on the market I'm going to have to rely on the government to help me get out of our bad loan - we'll buy that house even though we won't be able to afford it! =)

  6. are you in NYC?!?!?

I WOULD LOVE a Bunker Home.

Especially in a suburb of the "big city"...;-)

  7. My version of your Bunker House is the Queenslander. For the past 4 weekends, I've been visiting all the "Open for Inspection" homes that are on the market. I definitely cannot afford these but they help put lovely pictures in my dreams.

  8. I don't have a specific house in my head. But I do have one in my mind. My mind's house has a beautiful wrap around porch and has so much character. It has a big yard and is open and spacious on the inside. Maybe someday we will build it.

  9. I'm a big dreamer - There are TONS of houses through the years that I've "planned" on buying. There is one, though, that I've had my eye on for years... *Sigh*

  10. Maybe. But since I've never been inside...I don't know. :)

  11. Nope, we're in a town of 5,000 here. It's wide open but that's the way I like it. I'd never go back to the city where I would want a bunker house.

  12. First of all, your town house is nearly TWICE the size of my bungalow! So how's that for house envy! There's a street on my way to the in-laws that has about 5 houses I would LOVE to live in. It's never going to happen but I can dream, can't I?

  13. Yes, I do. The location is terrible, the garage is too small, and it has a breezeway that I hate, but I LOVE a house down the street from us. I actually hope it never goes on the market because I do not need to be tempted. At all.

Who knows . . . with market conditions the way they are, you may be able to buy the Bunker House eventually. You never know.

  14. Oh I have one! Unfortunately, I don't think I can ever afford it - it's just down the road though.

  15. I am not a city girl so I wouldn't call it my "bunker house"...I call mine my "Gone with the Wind" house. I love these plantation houses. I think they have such a special southern charm about them!! I could dream about them all day!

  16. I'm totally in love with our house, strangely enough. We would have to move to a totally different location/climate/etc. for me to want something different. Your Bunker House sounds fabulous!

  17. I think we all have houses like that. A dream home. Mine is a huge stone house right on top of a bluff over looking Lake Michigan. It is GORGEOUS. I drive by it all the time though we will NEVER be able to afford it. ;)

  19. I used to have one in my old town.
You so need to take a picture of the bunker house. My imagination is just not good. I need a pic.

  20. Yes! I do! I even have a picture of it on my computer. Because of it's primo location I will NEVER be able to afford it either. But that doesn't stop me from imagining the fabulous life I would live if I lived in that house.

  22. I wish there was a house we could afford in my parent's neighborhood. It would be about 1/10 the size of my house and cost at least twice to three times as much. I understand. You are allowed to fantasize.

  23. Does it count if I already owned the house once?

My bunker house is the house we sold in Denver when we moved to Utah. The new owners have done amazing things to the front yard and they put these lovely wooden shutters on the front windows.

Whenever we visit Denver we drive by...very slowly and ever so often my family sends me pictures of it.

We were married in the backyard of this house so it will always be special to us.

  24. Hey, you could totally afford your dream home if you moved to the burbs... wink, wink.

  25. I live in the burbs in my dream house after growing up in apartments all my life but every once in a while I wonder what it would be like to live in the big city in the heart of of everything.

  26. There's one right around the corner from me. The backyard is massive and you can catch glimpses of the garden/pool from the street. Not too much because of the huge trees blocking the view. To me, it resembles an oasis.

And when you said Bunker House, I thought of Archie and Edith. lol

  27. I had one of those. It was dilapidated and falling apart but OOZING potential. When it went on the market, I actually was able to get my husband to do a walk thru with me, but it was in such scary condition, he ran like hell and said I was nuts.

Of course, now it has been restored to its 1908 beauty and is the showpiece of the neighborhood, and every time we walk past it I give my husband the evil eye. No words are necessary. He KNOWS that should have been my house.

  28. Mine exists only in my head. And as long as it has a craft room and a reading room I will be in seventh heaven.

  29. Usually I just lust over homes with 2 bathrooms. But I know what you are talking about ;)

  30. I completely have a house like this. I fell head over heels for a house without even seeing the inside! When it was on the market we went and peeked in the windows after determining it was empty. So wonderful!! I took a picture and it is in the center of my vision board. I can't afford it now but someday it will be mine! ;)
