You Betta' Work!

I don't know why I am thinking about all the jobs I have had, but I think I have had at least 13. So let's see...

1) Corn Detasseling (hard, hard work)
2) McDonald's (I lasted one week 'nuff said)
3) Dairy Queen (I lasted three weeks)
4) Kohl's Dept. Store (My boss told me I was treating the customer's like cattle (wtf?))
5) I was a maid at the Day's Inn (talk about a sucky job)
6) Video tape operator for a TV station (best job ever!)
7) Chopped onions at Zipps Burger Joint (yuck, lasted 2 weeks)
8) AV for the dance dept. at University of Georgia (love, love, loved this job!)
9) Booked tennis court time for posh health club (hated it)
10) Assistant designer for horrible woman #1 (drunk and yelled at me all the time)
11) Assistant designer for crazy woman (actually put her hands on the TV to chant?)
12) Trader at the stock exchange (right place, right time...don't miss it, loved makin' the money)
13) Hmm, I'm gonna call myself a SAHM (hardest job ever) and a blog makeover specialist!;)

OK spill it, what's the worst job you've ever had? I think mine is #2,5,7.

  1. Definitely the summer I worked at Wendy's and the manager made me clean the bathrooms. Plus he was just an a-hole!

  2. Working at the "get your drink take your order" girl behind the counter (not the server - I did that too for another place and loved it)

  3. Concession stand worker at a movie theater - don't ever order a hot dog or a pickle at the movies, trust me! Also, I was a credit card telemarketer, and a grocery store checker...all not fun! Hahaha. Great idea for TT!

  4. A financial analyst at an office funiture headquarters. Boss was an a-hole. Work was dead boring.

I learned something important: no matter what they pay you, if it doesn't feel right don't take the job.

I just could not make myself care about the new line of file cabinets, no matter how hard I tried.

  5. I worked in a factory for a few years while I figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up. Hot, stinky and the most repetitive things I've ever done.

While a freshman in college, I worked in the dish room of the cafetaria. I was the guy on the other side of the conveyer belt. It only lasted about a month. Unbelievably disgusting. All that grossness for work/study pay...sweet!

  6. Depends on how you classify "worst". Of course, the jobs you have as a teen usually are generally all awful, but my last full-time job would definitely be considered my WORST.

I had a nightmare boss. He was the type that talked about everyone behind their back, and had a serious lack of self confidence. I always questioned whether he really liked me and I ended up quitting pretty much on the spot when I realized he was giving me an official "warning" about my behavior. Which, to this point, I thought, was wonderful. I was about to launch a new product at our sales conference. I personally think he didn't like me taking away his spotlight.

Every single job I had prior, I had great relationships with everyone I worked with and for, but only he seemed to think that I was worthless. It was he that was an idiot. But I quit, without having another job, and we decided to try to start a family. A few weeks later, we were pregnant with our first. I became a SAHM and never looked back.

I still hate that guy...but it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

  7. WHoa! Onions? I wouldn't last a minute...I'm a blubbering mess making chili :(

Worst job ever for me-- Model in an In Sync + Gloria Estefan music video (was treated like scum the whole time)

  8. You definitely had worse jobs than I did. But I was pretty focused after I landed that after-school gig at the record store. Music industry or bust!

Well, I didn't bust, but I'm not entirely done with music, either.

  12. THIS IS VERY FUNNY AND INTERESTING. GOOD JOURNAL IDEA.
I BABYSAT FOR A WONDERFUL FAMILY AS A TEEN. THEY TOOK ME ON VACATIONS W/THEM AND I LOVED IT.

WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, I WORKED AT A REALLY FANCY SALON AS A SHAMPOO GIRL. I WASHED PEOPLE'S HAIR ALL DAY AND I SOAKED MANY OF THEM WITH THE HOSE THING. I MADE REALLY GOOD TIPS AND I GOT FREE SERVICES. I LOVED THAT JOB NOW THAT I'M THINKING ABOUT IT.

AFTER I GRADUATED, I DID SOCIAL WORK FOR ABOUT SIX MONTHS, MY SHORTEST JOB EVER. I HATED IT. I WAS A SOCIAL SERVICE SPECIALIST FOR ADULT POPULATIONS WITH DISABILITIES. IT WAS VERY DEPRESSING. I WAS NOT CUT OUT FOR THAT KIND OF WORK.

AFTER THAT, I GOT A JOB IN A RADIOLOGIST OFFICE DOING FRONT DESK DUTIES. LITTLE STRESS, NOT DEPRESSING AND GREAT HOURS. I LIKED THAT JOB TOO. MY OLD BOSS CALLS EVERY SO OFTEN TO ASK IF I'M READY TO COME BACK. REALLY GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE.
    THAT'S MY RESUME.

  16. Ooh. I hate to spoil the surprise, because mine is on the list of 100 that I will post Friday on my 300th blog post! I can tell you that fast food is NOT fun but the worst job I ever had was babysitting.

  18. Wow, what a list, but you are right, being a mommy is the toughest job out there. Have a great TT. :)

  19. Worst job ever was working as a file clerk. Eight hours a day, five days a week trapped in the file room putting things in alphabetical order. OMG...BORING!

  20. I don't think I've ever loved a job I've had LOL!

  21. Heehee... good post!

The only item I have ever stolen was a very lacy bra from Kohl's at the age of 12.

    :)

Worst job... I have been fortunate... lifeguarding in the rain. Yuck!

  22. i worked in a specialty market...behind the counter. would you like a 1/2 pound of that tuna salad? but, i lasted 1 week because, the smells there...ew. and, the fact that the food wasn't fresh. they used the same tuna salad and all the other crap, for days...we had to mix it up before displaying it, to make it look fresh...so nasty!! hated. it!

  23. Boy, some of those jobs sound awful. No wonder you worked on the NYSE - it's pretty straight forward after a corn detassler!

    Happy TT!

  24. One thing for sure, you wern't called to the food industry!
One summer I cleaned a swimming pool before opening day. Drained it, cleaned all of the scum and debris out of it, got the worst sunburn of my life.

    Happy TT

  25. Great list! I think my worst one was working for my dad at his dairy farm. Milking and feeding cows. All day long. One day, I showed up- he handed me gloves that went to my shoulders and told me that we were going to artificially inseminate cows. Sorry. NO WAY. That was my last day.

  26. i waited tables at pizza hut, i stunk of grease every day and never felt clean no matter how hard i scrubbed....

  30. Worst job ever? Working as a legal secretary to a guy who was a screaming lunatic. I lasted one week...just like Bruce Springsteen: "I went out for a ride and I never went back..."!
    Happy TT!

  31. My worst job was working as a Shift Manager at Hot 'n' Now. Most of the employees were either lazy and immature or bitter and insolent. Just like you, I didn't last long at McDonald's. I worked there for 4 days and called in before my 5th day to tell them I wasn't coming back.

  32. No. 1 sounds interesting. Worst job: house cleaner to a 98-year-old German woman whose son was a soldier for the Germany army in WWII. She was mean and miserable.

  33. It's terrible but my worst job could have been my best job under different circumstances.

I was a rep for a weightloss company. I loved the idea of helping women feel better about themselves and to get healthy. I HATED the emphasis on commission and selling extra stuff I wasn't sure the person would need.

It was terrible because I aced the certification and was natural at selling the products I felt were invaluable...because I felt they were invaluable. But everything else was all about paycheck and I just couldn't do it.

It was also two hours away by bus and a mile walk to get there. Talk about insult to injury. I had to let it go. But I'd still love to work in the fitness industry and haven't given up ways to accomplish it.

    Happy TT

  36. Ever been to Disney World? Did you notice that people wearing hundreds of glow necklaces, bracelets, etc. magically appear when it gets dark? Did you notice that kids attack, climb on, beat up, and generally harrass those people? Life as a Glow Stick Girl sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Definitely a wide variety of jobs. You got me thinking I bet I have had about 13 jobs,I will need to count them.I never worked at a fast food joint but I do not think I would like it.
And being a SAHM is always going to be your hardest and most rewarding job.

  38. I used to have a part time job cleaning bathrooms at my mother's timber warehouse where all the truck drivers used to stop by.

  41. Hmm - probably waitressing in a busy little diner that was cheap and not liscensed (cheap so very low tips) and the owner took 20% of our tips as well. There were about 5 of us girls there and evern though it kinda sucked we partied our butts off after work and had fun anyway.

  42. I was a nanny one summer in college. I had been babysitting throughout my teenage years and loved it. However, I realized after 3 months of being a full-time nanny, that at age 19 I was definitely not ready to be someone's mom. The mother was really nice, but was a single mom with a wonderful career so she just wasn't available for the kids as much. Everything was on her shoulders. It really made me sad for her and them. The dad was a "lifetime" college student and artist...just not dependable. The kid's weren't bad, but they were both ADHD, and it was just a bit too much for me. Good thing...it was the best birth control evah! I didn't have my daughter until I was 27! Which was really old for girls in my family! :-) LOL!

  44. The summer after I graduated high school I worked in a boutique at the mall; a clothing store called Saturday's (for those of you on the west coast...I don't even think they exist any longer...).

Anyway I had to work the 3.30 to 9.30 shift, even on weekends and I only lasted 3 months! I was just not geared to pressure sell on commission and the other girls were ruthless; they would steal my sales! Or I would have nightmare clients and people wanting to do returns and I was horrible with those when I worked the register... I can remember picking up clothing that was strewn on the floor (people are animals) and having only 1/2hr to eat and going to one of those disgusting food courts in the mall (you know the ones) Ugh, what memories... ;)

  45. It sounds like food service isn't your thing for sure... :)

  47. I worked part time one summer as housekeeper at the Ramada. That was the without a doubt the hardest, nastiest job I've ever had. You better believe I always remember that and leave a nice tip for the maids now.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I cleaned up the kennels (at 5am) at a dog grooming salon while I was pregnant with my first daughter. Perhaps that was the reason I had severe morning sickness until I was 8 months along and quit my job!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Worst job I've ever had? waitress at a Big Boy. I only lasted 3 weeks.

I worked the dish machine at the cafeteria in college, which was horrible, stinky work--you had to shower and launder your clothes after working--but the camaraderie more than made up for it.

  50. Oh wow - the worst job - let me think....OH - I temped at a construction site way out in the middle of nowhere - where no one ever came, called or did anything. He just wanted someone there in case soemone did. It was boring and awful. (before the days of internet). He wanted to hire me - and I refused! TOO boring and scary as it was down about five miles of dirt road...

    Happy TT-13!
